As world blood donor day recently passed on June 14, we take a deep dive into anaemia, a blood condition that like many diseases and conditions can be more easily combated through awareness and early detection.

Anaemia refers to a medical condition in which the blood does not have enough healthy red blood cells. It is often a result from lack of red blood cells or dysfunctional red blood cells in the body.

In Sub Saharan Africa, a high percentage of young children and women are particularly at risk of severe anaemia. According to a WHO estimate, anaemia affects more than 68% of pre-school children, 48% of non-pregnant women and 57% of pregnant women in Sub-Saharan Africa. The complex interactions between anaemia and other factors like malnutrition make it worse.

We take the benefits of early detection and treatment very seriously and in countries like Nigeria alone, we hold over 100 free detection camps to screen for haemoglobin levels, one of the warning signs for possible anaemia. Held monthly in churches, community centres and local pharmacies, we try to screen at least 50 people.

Awareness is key, and we supply posters and distribute brochures at key points around our camps to attract at-risk patients who may be suffering from a range of symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, pale or yellow skin or dizziness and light-headedness. Once a positive diagnosis is made, our friendly Healthcare professionals give basic advice and hand out free samples of our most effective treatments. In all cases, we refer vulnerable people to medical doctors or local pharmacies, where we ensure that our medicines are always available.

Below is a list of some of the most common treatments developed By Shalina Healthcare.

Hemoforce is a haematinic combination. It is available as a capsule and syrup formulation, which contains unique iron forms in addition to folic acid, cyanocobalamin and other essential nutrients important for the production of red blood cells.
